Michael, why not look up the Army Radios website - the both history and sales
website. They have many photos.
I *believe* the 81 set is the EXTREMELY CUTE backpack set i saw at the
Rickreall hamfest. I do hope they can be imported again. There was an Epay
listing of dozens of Chinese (PRC) radio magazines before i went away for
Christmas; several of the covers showed Chinese military as well as youth
groups, training, etc. using what i believe is the 81 set. I *believe* the 81 set
deployed is distinguishable by the "marihuana leaf" looking (so it's been said)
capacitor hat on the top of its antenna mast. It also has the cases of the power
transistors showing thru the front panel, mounted that way. Maybe that was too
see if they got red hot.
My impression of Chinese military radios, is that if you thought the golden age
of shortwave military radios with discrete, replaceable parts has unfortunately
ended; well, you get a reprieve. I mean that in the most positive sense. Size,
architecture, knob style, and a REAL mud-brown color. Great! Even though
Geoff Fors sez they are built out of crummy consumer-grade components.
