The 707 was rolled by Tex Johnston who was the Boeing Chief Test Pilot
and not just a BUFF driver. A Barrel roll "properly executed" will not
impose in excess of 1.5 G for the complete roll. IIRC Tex had rolled it
several times in the week before at altitude above the Everett facility.
We used to shoot Inverted ILS in the Tiger DC-8 63 Sim at LAX with
inverted missed approaches. Then some wheel got word and they programmed
it not to go inverted in any approach configuration. But it would go
wherever in a Dutch roll if you did not recover correctly or turn the
Yaw damper back on.
Those were the days then the FUZZ (FAA) got to be Aholes.
