"The Old order Changeth, yielding place to new....."

A view from OZ....As a VK ham licence holder for 60+ years, I've seen and have been
part of the introduction of licensing functions. Back in 1956 we had no options...
no ticket if you were younger than 16 ,.....a 14 wpm send /receive and stiff
technical exam with one question as I vividly recall "describe a floating
paraphase inverter and sketch the circuit." Prohibitions --no third party
traffic, all contacts to be made using the English language, and definitely no
matters of political or religious content to be discussed.Power limits to be 100W
and special application for portable operation.
Of course, the tsaumi of technical inquisitiveness generated by WW2 flooded the
evironment... no point in being a ham operator unless that awareness existed... you
had to roll your own via parts or surplus. The wave rolled on and dissipated.
Today, no code, say what you like in whatever language, bad or otherwise and with
a couple of levels of licensing in an effort to stimulate the aforementioned
technical awareness that the new generations take for granted . A level little
higher than CB radio. A forlorn ambition... no stimulus to compromise and MAKE
somthing.... example. I advertised in the "Amateur Radio" journal some surplus
gear. Apart from my advt, there was one other flogging some commercial ham
radio. The piece that took the attention of one guy was a R-11A the 200 to 500
kHz Command rx close equivalent. I 'd mentioned -- foolishly.--.as used for a
Q5er..but no dynamotor. His phone call asked what's a Q5er and why hasn't it
got an AC power supply.!
I sold nothing.... no surprise?
Let's face it fellows...flogging dead horses or trying to lead them to water is a
wasted exercise/emotion. The sacred cowsof personal values have to left to
historians to explain the sacrifice.
Follow your own pursuits, bemoan the past by all means, but don't let it deflect
making and encouraging. opportunities for new developments.
Billy Shakespeare 's enigmatic conundrum applies inpart..."there's nothing either
good or bad but thinking makes it so"
All the best for 2007 lads and lasses

Ahhh... I'm just sour-graping over the FCC
not keeping 5 WPM for Extra Class, Will.
I was *for* the rest of it, and filed comments
with them for the record.
And I think the cartoon/dialog were funny.
Kinda biting, but funny.
We'll see how it turns out.
Perhaps it will be better than what is reported
from G- and VK- land.... I hope.
