Right, it just the 800 pound straw elephant man in the room.
> That would also include any written examination. Even if the FCC gave away all priviledges for the price of an internet e-mail application, few "kids" would be interested in amateur radio today.
I know of (probably) hundreds of kids interested in technology that
could take the written exam after about two hours or studying (and six
hours of drinking) and still pass with flying colors. Do not
underestimate these people. If they saw ham radio as something they
could get into, they would. But, for the reasons I gave before, they
go elsewhere.
> Neither do I...there should be some sort of automated rig shutdown system whenever medical conditions start being discussed! : - )
Joke if you want, but if I go downstairs right now, I bet in five
minutes I will hear it all - antenna, temperature, and what bandage is
currently oozing.
> Almost every aspect of your description of older hams can be observed at any gathering of, say, military veterans. But our very best young folk (and some not so young) still voluntarily join to become the core of our military services. That's because there is still challenge and honor in military service, and the best people respond to positively to challenges.
Frankly, I am not sure how to respond to this. Yes, there is honor to
military service, but what does that have to do with getting into ham
old radios?
Also, it seems to me that a good number of our very best young folk do
not join military service, and go on to do good things.
> It is an easily made but unsupportable assumption when one claims that only the latest glitter will appeal to a young person.
This is one of the problems! Many old radio types assume this. I do
not. There are A LOT of kids interested in older tech, but most BA ham
types simply will not acknowledge it. They go on with their usual
ways, turning off any kids that come around, then wonder what
happened.
