It may not be too well known but three Canadian Radio Amatuers were attached to British embassies in Lima, Peru; Montevideo, Uruguay; and Buenas Aires, Argentina to attempt to intercept German subs during WWII.
The effort hardly paid off as skip turned out to be less than optimum.
One Ottawa veteran told me of German soldiers who dismbarked from the Graf Spee prior to it being scuttled off Montevideo and marched down the main street in full battle dress with arms.
They did manage to intercept a German spy who decided to move to Argentina and by coincidence one of the three Canadians sat next to him on the same train as he had orders to relocate also.
All three amateurs are still living and in their 80's and 90's and still operate occasionally.
