Well, i would argue that too. Or at least, that they are homely in a way
that is different from much of commercial products.  Look at Hallicrafters
products from the past. To me, it takes a special eye to love an SX-43 or
SX-16 or Howard receiver. There is a lot of chintz to commercial products,
attempts to tart up what would otherwise be a plain ( military plain? ) item.
Consider even Drake's front panel design on the R-line and SPR-4. And just
try to repaint that front panel !  
I value: robust design for rough conditions. understandable and ergonomic
front panel design. no B-S presentation with no plastic or chrome gingerbread.
kamikazi-ness or gladiator-ness of some machine that was made to duke it out
and very possibly be destroyed in the contest.  Not all mil gear excells in all
these areas. I like the BC-312 a lot, but the front panel looks like the control
locations were assigned in random fashion. 
Instruments with character and experience.
