I used the SCR-291 HF DF Set after 1945. We used
from 4220 KHz up to 9320 KHz to give steers to aircraft.
It used five 20' verticals, set in a square. Prior to and
during WWII the Signal Corps had HF DF sets that
were mounted on short towers. The operator sat
inside and rotated with the tower. Most of these sets
were used for locating spies I'm told. You're right
about reradiation being the problem with loops on
metal aircraft. Breck, how about trying a bar for a
loop. Aircraft used those for a while, didn't they?.
