Some radar tubes had (have) three-electrode T/R
tubes. Some of the military radio I've seen used
an ionized gas to lower the breakdown voltage,
and the gas itself is a complicated mixture.
The idea is to stabilize the breakdown point in all
kinds of tempertures, etc. There used to be a gas
rectifier in all the old car radios. OZ3 I think.
Same for most VR Tubes. I think barium or boron
was the source of excitation. Trivia.
