Sometimes I wonder if these "survival" packs weren't just
moral-building "feel-good" devices, mostly because, AFAK,
they contain nothing to help the downed flyer detect levels 
of the radioactive fallout that would be a consequence of his mission.
Contrary to popular myth and propaganda, if you can find a 
way to hunker-down in a modestly contaminated area for
a couple or three weeks, you stand a good chance of getting away
with most of your life expectancy intact.
If you're in a heavily contamination area.... Well, grab
a few bottles of vodka, a willing wench if you can find one,
and save at least one bullet in your .45 auto; two, if you
find the wench.  You're gonna need'um.
