Great program Friday on History Channel. "D-day, the lost records"

These were miles of P-38 recon footage superposed by computer on topo
maps.

Actually little used in presentation. Instead were interviews with
several officers on both sides who looked and interviewed well.
Contrasted sharply with elisted men's "opinions" of what took place

My favorite was one Bob Slaughter who's rank never mentioned but in one
case referred to "My two sergeants."

Slaughter was in a group of 225 Army Rangers of 29th Infantry Div'n. He
scaled cliffs @ Omaha bch & got to huge, empty pilboxes @ cliff-top.
Big-time surprise to them, only observer posts there.

Roads away were gnarled with track marks which they surmised were
where art'ly hauled away. They followed same inland for only 1.5
miles & found five 6" (155mm) parked in a field with just the serving
crews. Slaughter and his five companions let a 50-man armored
patrol unit pass, dispatched the serving crews, & trashed the
breeches with incendiary grenades.

Then if that's not enuf for 1 day, they hunted down the source of
a non-stop ground-to-ground rocket barage (sounds like "verschvagen")
Here they used "one of the only operating radios on Omaha
Beach" and walked in Naval Art'ly fire taking out the "verschvagen"

I supported the BC-1000/Pont-du-Hoc theory a year back & it was wrong.

Now the "verschvagen" footage showed a BC-611 as "one of the only.."
which might have been file footage. Maybe a BC-1000 there? Its
line-of-sight to bch & 611 might have been enuf.

Another radio thing was the big chance the Navy took running Destroyer
McCook 500yds fm shore & smashed targets with 5" art'ly under
radio direction fm shore. When success scored, the call came "well
done McCook."

It's speculated M Clark would have withdrawn fm Omaha hadn't the Navy men
aboard McCook gone out on their limb

Great program. TV-Guide/TIVO shows no re-runs in next 10 days. But
keep an eye peeled.
