The stuff could be properly installed with all bits functioning. There would be
essentially no risk of fire or anything else, if the circuit breakers were
popped out or the supply to the CBs was inactive.
As to requiring GPS and other modern stuff, I'd bet these planes fly under VFR
all the time and never leave the ground in bad weather.
As to minimizing weight, they likely fly with FAR less fuel than in WW II, never
mind the bomb load or ammo. IMO, it's an excuse, not a real issue.
