I think there maybe an issue with the FAA whether the operating equipment is approved for flight if you carry passengers.From my hot air ballooning days,I recall having to "annual" every part of the balloon by a certified balloon repair station since we were a commercial outfit.Tha altimeter and rate of assent/decent and temp meters all had to be sent out for calibration.If you carried radios they had to be type accepted and properly licensed also.
So it may go beyond the arrogance part.
BTW,When I toured the Collings aircraft (twice now) the folks I spoke with were very polite and answered my questions and even allowed me access to the cockpit of the B-24 after I got to talking about my collection of WWII radio gear.
I have a great photo of my eldest when she was 4 at the waste gunner's position!

Agreed. W/o the avionics, the planes, likely as not, would not know where they
are, where they are going, not be able to communicate, call for help if they
are shot at or down, or get home.. But then radios are not macho like flying or
shooting.
