The Army apparently ran into this problem too.   The muting relay in later 
342 models (MX, M, N & NX) shorted the grid of the first audio tube (V7, 6R7) to 
ground on transmit along with the antenna. 
An additional relay hidden inside your receiver to do the same thing would be 
an easy solution.
