Could you define "thick" a bit better, Dave?  I'm not familiar with the 
R-4B.  I normally use sharp tools (honed just before use) and kerosene 
or WD-40 as the coolant (very important - the various plastics don't do 
well with dull tools and resulting heat.)  Use the "blue" masking tape 
to protect the clear surface while machining if there is nothing else on it.
