Ray,

As a general rule, radio manufacturers didn't make meters, dynamotors, wire
and cable or connectors. One of the WW-II meter manufacturers made black face
meters. The rest made white face ones. The black face meters show up on one
or two orders of a lot of the common (to us) Navy sets (TCS, AN/ART-13, etc.).
As far as I can see, the only significance of black face meters on the radio
of the TBX-4 is that the black-face maker just happened to get that contract.

The idea that the TBX-8 (and TBY-8) was never deployed got started several
years ago as a question. Later some of the questioners started stating it as a
fact. But there's never been any proof brought forward that this was the
case. Only the fact that more of the newest models show up in good condition than
of the older models. But this is true of everything built during the war.
The earliest TBX-8 manual that I have is dated 22 April 1944, almost a year and
a half before VJ-Day. So I don't believe it. Production of war materials
was still running at full steam through all of 1944, and carried over into 1945
before any significant number of contracts began to be canceled due to the end
of the war being in sight.
