I have several field strength meters which run on 18 volts, requiring two 9 volt stacks (6 cells) of AA NiCads.  I went through a number of the (soft) white plastic battery holders as sold by RatShack and others, as the ends invariably broke and popped loose due to spring pressure.  I found black holders molded from a thermosetting compound from Philmore (!) and also from another manufacturer I don't remember, but sold by Mouser.  So, if you can't fit in the preferred metal holders from Keystone or others, steer clear of the soft white plastic type, or reinforce the heck out of them.
