[Milsurplus] Recommendations on page scanners?

I would like to begin digitizing my rarer manuals.

Then i can provide them easily to anyone needing the information,
without further trouble copying or (heaven forbid) loan.

I'd like to hear if people have found any page scanners better or
worse. Specifically, i am thinking one key criterion might be how
the scanner copes with bound books - since you cannot always
disassemble the material.

Also, is anyone still using a hand scanner also, like to grab 
smallish images off a page?
