For something more modern, but still not state-of-the-art, I use a Harris
RT-1446/URC. This is a 1.6 - 30 MHz, SSB, CW, AME (optional FSK) transceiver
which by itself puts out 100 Watts. It runs from 12 volts but most come with
attached universal power supply (12 or 24 VDC, 120 or 230 VAC). Common
accessories include automatic antenna tuners and 500 or 1000 Watt autotune
amplifiers. My setup is the transceiver with PS, the auto antenna tuner, and
the AM-7223 500 Watt amp.

This is not a field radio, it is more meant for embassy or light shipboard use.
Nothing crazy miniature, it is all modular and repairable, yet solid state
except for the amp tube.

I also have the AM-7224 amp but it just doesn't seem worth the effort to set it
up; the 500 Watt amp is a 7.25" high rack unit, self contained, while the 1000
Watt amp is TWO 10.5" rack units (power supply and amp chassis). Besides, I
only have the antenna tuner rated for 500 Watts. 1000 Watts is only a few db
over 500 anyway (and my 500 Watt amp peaks at over 800 anyhow).

Punch in a freq, hit the key and everything tunes in a few seconds. Makes life
easy.

I use it on CAP and MARS, and it is even NTIA compliant. I hardly ever use the
amp, I find if 100 Watts doesn't do it, 500 won't help. The radio and ant tuner
run on 12 volts so I generally just run it from a battery stack kept fully charged.
