The problem isn't the voltage but the physical size.  To put a round battery 
or two 9-volt ones into the meter will require some machining on either the 
case or the front panel.  The 417 was a flat battery with contacts on each end.  
The still available 411 looks just like the 417 but is slightly smaller in 
all three dimensions, and the 509 I think it was is smaller still.  One list 
member wrote that he thought Simpson had made (and may still sell) an adaptor to 
take one of the smaller batteries.  I'm waiting to hear back from him on that 
question.
