Prior to and during WWII there was a need for small portable
receivers in the 200 to 400 KHz band. Not all aircraft had
radios. One standard item on the flight plans we used in Air
Traffic Control school in 1946 was "NORDO" , and it was
pretty common. Some aircraft had instrument panel receivers,
and the control towers and radio beacons and ranges used
the 200 - 400 KHZ band. Pilots became very good at range
and beacon approaches. The military procured a lot of
"LearAvain" portables. They were civilian. I used one as
late as 1953 when maintaining LF Radio Ranges for the
US Air Force. So a nice well-packaged self contained
200 - 400 KHz receiver always found work.
