Hi,
Jim Farrior, a Merchant Marine Radio Officer, has written a great memoir
which can be downloaded at

 <http://home.comcast.net/~w4fok>

He mentions a portable set that was left in his radio room for use on
convoy, but with no instructions as to its use. He said he took it above
and heard the screening destroyers. I sent him a picture of a TBY and he
confirmed that was the set.

The PT-109 report does not speak well of the inter ship comms with TBY.

A friend of my grandfather told me he took a cruise as a Signal Corps
officer with a couple of PT boats to investigate captured Japanese RADAR
equipment. He said that the PT boat he was on was unable to raise the
other by radio, so they had to pull alongside and holler, leaving him with
an unfavorable opinion of Navy radio. It is easier for me to believe that
happened with TBYs than with TCS, which I think is the standard HF set for
PT boats.

One trouble I can picture with using TBY in conjunction with TBS is getting
the TBY in the TBS receiver's band pass. Anyone know how selective TBS is
and if it has a variable receiver tuning feature?

TBY to TBY comms ok since the receiver is as broad as the transmitter is
unstable.

Still having fun listening to the CBers on the TBY. They're an
entertaining bunch.
