for several years now a group of us has been bringing out vintage gear
to hamfest and conducting local nets. couple of the largest being the
3885 and 51.0 nets at Dayton, in as much as their are fewer and fewer
people every day who have any experience using this equipment I have
always thought that this is a great way of developing a understanding of
the real world operation of this gear. myself I have operated a verity
of PRC/VRC radios and have experience operating the 611 and TBX in net
operations and in the field. This gives you a whole new understanding
for the radio. In the past I have suggested that maybe we can get a
couple people to bring out their TBY sets and maybe we can get a idea of
how they operate, myself am inclined to think they would not be good for
anything beyond line of sight but having not use one before that's only
speculation. And I am fully aware that the TBY will not meet modern band
plan requirements and may be a source of spurious emissions but for a
hour on one Sunday afternoon don't think it would bring the world to a
end.
