Maybe it was what they had handy at the airfield at the time? I often
wonder if the simply issue of expediency could really explain a lot of
the out-of-the-ordinary (to us) things that we see or hear of.

>From the documentation I've collected, expediency and
what was on hand at the moment beat out "by the book"
more often than not.
These guys were not dumb; they had to get comms going
quickly and couldn't afford to wait around
for every "i" to be dotted and "t," crossed.
Mr. Raimey settled everyone's hash
about SCR-274N in the 8th Air Force when he produced
that photo of it installed in the 8th's airfield tower for Air/Ground use.
I have other photos of SCR-274N and the Bendix twins (don't
remember the nomen), both "aircraft sets," installed in towers.
I have Atlantic Convoy ship logs showing the TBY-
the "Marine infantry in the Pacific only" radio?- used as
an interphone for mulitiple Atlantic convoys over at least a year.
And I have documentation on
SCR-274N and SCR-287 installed in motor rescue launches
used to recover crews from ditched bombers in the PTO.
How'bout them apples?
