While most replies have concentrated on keeping away from high voltage, let me offer the following:  There are a number of affordable non-contact infra-red thermometers available these days which elimitnate the need to attempt self-electrocution.  I hear that even the RatShack model is pretty accurate.  If anyone needs more information, I can ask my friend who specializes in buying one of everything.
