The drawback to using the xtal controlled ones, of course, is: crystals.
A big pain to order. Of course, now, if you're gungho, you get one of 
those crystal synthesizer circuit boards and plug it into the 8 MHz
crystal socket, and then just program in freqs as and when you want.

I used to read, i think, about 6 and maybe even 10m conversions of some
of the vhf milsurplus gear. Has anyone really seen this?
I briefly had a couple of MAN sets, 10m FM, which i sold for $15. I sorta
regret that now. There's always regret at parting with items from the
