Rob:
Unfortunately, Dave S. tongue in cheek response id pretty much correct. 225 to 400 MHz is and has been since WW2 assigned exclusively to military aircraft. Not to exclude intermittent low power devices like garage door openers and other one way signalling. TV channel 13 is 210 to 216, there is a inland marine band from 216 to 220, amplitude compandered SSB two way on the chunk taken from the Hams for UPS from 220 to 222, ham 222 to 225, the air band, and miscellaneous government assignments from 400 to 420. Ham again from 420 to 450. There is an overlay of satellite assignments in there, but other than the ham bands, which are largely SSB and FM, there is little that you can talk to on AM. Except military aircraft, of course, but since 9/11, I don't think you want to get caught doing that.
