I once built my own 12 VDC to 110 VAC 400 hz 350 watt inverter and it took way more time and money than I expected. I mined one of the old Linear Sytems Century mobile ham power supplies for basic parts.
I recently bought a cheap 60 hz inverter and opened it up and poked around with a scope. I dont see any quick and easy conversion to 400 hz. ICs appear to control everything and they are not common parts so hard to tell what is going on. EBay occasionally has some mil surplus solid state acft 28 VDC to 110 VAC 400 hz 700 watt inverters really cheap (I paid $45). They are beautiful units, crystal controlled and since they are not FAA approved they don't appeal to the $$$ general aviation crowd on eBay. Its pretty easy to find 110 VAC 60 Hz to 28 VDC supplies cheap. Just buy a cheap 12 to 110 VAC 60 hz inverter, hook it all up and you have 12 VDC to 110 VAC 400 hz.
