It's obviously time for a few words from someone who actually knows what they're
talking about, having working in the refrigeration industry for over 30 years:
refrigerants have absolutely, positively, no effect on the ozone - as Robert
pointed out, they're heavier than air, and even if broken down into chlorine and
flourine, are STILL too heavy to get very high+ACE- And all attempts at measuring
any amount of high-altitude, man-made effluvia become irrelevant every time a
volcano erupts - which they do on a yearly basis.
If R-12 had any effect on the ozone, so would R-11, R-22, R502, and R-etc., as
the composition is virtually identical - only the proportions are shifted to
effect a slight change in condensation temperature. R-12 tho is the only R that
was being used in any volume by easily-duped 'consumers', so it's the one
blamed - and banned. DuPont, who'd patented Freon in 1899 with a 99-year,
non-renewable patent, realized that when the patent ran out, they were going to
lose control over production of their most-profitable product in that line, so
they paid for bogus 'studies' to 'prove' that refrigerants were causing ozone
depletion. Pure BS - with enough money, you can 'prove' anything you want,
regardless whether it violates the known laws of physics (like heavier-than-air
substances wafting upward+ACE-).
Contrary to the incognoscenti, I have observed that R-134a actually works BETTER
than R-12. I've had to convert (pervert?) numerous automotive systems over
(including two of my own), and found that R-134a gets colder with less effort
and volume than R-12. The only negative effect I've observed is that the older
mineral oils used in compressors will break down (probably due to the flourine
content of R134a), and should be blown/drained out and replaced with newer oils
(mineral works okay, as long as it's a newer formulation).
It's all about laws of physics - not stupid lies of captive 'scientists'. Since
I doubt any of us actually believe that God works daily miracles to loft CFC's
high into the air, or that He causes Twin towers to fall down from aircraft
strikes when they were specifically designed to prevent it, or that he sank the
Titanic just because the owners were arrogant, lets try to stick to facts+ACE- e
