I do believe that on the large raids, 1000 bombers
and fighters and pathfinders, there was a VHF
frequency problem in that there could be two
groups of aircraft, (fighters and bombers), that
were channeled for different frequencies, (all
four of them), so there was a project to invent
a 522/522 kind of a repeater so that one group
would be echoed to the other.  That was at a
time when xtals were in critically short supply.
I don't think this idea ever got very far.  I also
think the idea was copied from the Brits who did
some interesting things with VHF.  They used much
more VHF than we ever did.
