It's not a "useless" scare, radium can indeed be quite hazardous. Their
response, however, is definitely over the top as any intact instrument poses
an insignificant risk. Those with broken glass or external, exposed radium
paint need to be handled by trained personnel with proper personal
protection. A large number of instruments in one place could also pose an
exposure risk and should not be where personnel work in close proximity.
However, it would not take much shielding to protect from it.
