Hi

HF command sets definitely were used for communications between  
aircraft. They are good lightweight radios. Unfortunately they don't  
put out enough power to talk back to base when you are over target on  
a typical B-17 mission. I'm sure it happened under unusual  
conditions. The high power radios were heavy enough that if they  
didn't need to haul them along they would have left them behind.
