I suspect back when the black wrinkle/crinkle was big, the likely
reason was its durability and resistance to scratching, etc. as well
as covering an otherwise-shiney cabinet. Of course, that was went the
paint was new - it would be hard to make any sense of that with old
surplus equipment that seems to flake and chip if you just look at it
wrong. I like the black wrinkle when it's all cleaned up well and
oiled. Problem is finding clean examples, it looks like hell when you
find a piece that has most of its paint missing. Haven't gotten quite
bold enough yet to try touching up or respraying like Dave and others
have had success with.

Every picture I've seen of the TDQ shows them in the 'newer' gray
finish, yet the one I had given to me a couple years back is all
black. A very nice looking, well-proportioned and built transmitter
with very little utility in today's world. The paint on mine is
horrible, but the tags all unscrew so repainting shouldn't be too
difficult.
