Ray and the group...

The Navy started going to Haze Grey for depot overhauls sometime in the
'50s vice having to reproduce the black crackle finish. (.....and maintain
the industrial process to do black crackel) The change to SO-239 was
yard-done on sets too. If you go to the West Coast Military Radio
Collector's Group website there are pictures of the Hank Brown W6DJX TCS 5
or 6 in yard painted grey as well as one of my newer sets, TCS-12, still in
original black. I think the Navy just wanted to simplify the overhaul
process. Hey! I have black and gray RBA/RBB/RBC too. The grey sets probable
have all the mods available at yard time too from the E.I.M.B. The
"Electronic Installation and Maint. Book", BU-SHIPS 67, and it's bulletins
list the mods.
