There is a photo of the TCS setup in the vertical mounted position in the
Navy SHIPS 275 equipt.manual. The b&w photo, as best as I can tell , shows a
light colored TCS. It did not look like a black face TCS. I believe the
manual is dated 1944. I'll take a closer look tonight.

I recall someone discussing this a few years back, maybe Ed Zeranski?
IIRC, the general consensus seemed to be that the Navy did this around
the time of the Korean war because newer gear was being done this way
from the start. Something to the affect of painting older gear to the
new standard ot whatever. It was in the context of RBAs, RBBs and so
on.
Of course, it's been a few days so I could very well be remembering this
wrong.
