Thanks, William, that's more than I knew.

I assume it must have performed simply a "localizer" function, with out glide path info. I was also curious about the physical characteristics and what relationship it had to other equipment:

(1) Was it an "adapter" that stole power from another set?
(2) Did it need a R-23 or -24/ARC-5 with the special ILS audio output and MX-19 to function (and thus could not be used with ARA receivers)?
(3) Did it feed a converted LF/MF RF signal to a R-23 or -24, and then did the R-23/24's MX-19 send a signal to an indicator unit?
(4) Was the indicator similar to the I-101 used with the USAAF ILS? The ID-29/ARN-9 indicator is simliar, but appears to display both localizer and glide path info.
(5) Was the AN/ARN-9 just a later improved JAN equivalent of the ZA with glide slope info?
(6) When was the USN's ILS abandoned and the USAAF's version adopted as world standard?

This is just a list of my main areas of interest. I don't expect anyone can answer all of these questions.
