Bill,
Although there were black -B models of the other three SCR-274-N receivers
(there's a nice condition black WECo BC-455-B sitting on the floor behind me),
and all of the photos in T.O. 08-10-50 dated 15 February 1943 except one show
black finished components, the undated BC-946-B Supplement only shows aluminum
finished components (including the FT-310-A). And both of the BC-946-B's that
I had when I sold my Command Set collection 21 years ago this summer were
aluminum finish.
This is all circumstantial evidence, of course, but sometimes that's all we
get. Until someone comes up with a black BC-946-B, I vote for CBY-46145.
Incidentally, also sitting on the floor is a not quite so nice CCT-46145.
And the BC-455-B, according to the guy I got it from, came out of the salvage
yard at what's now known as Rhein-Main AFB in 1946. He brought it back to the
States in 1948 and it sat in his garage until last year when I acquired it.
