I thought it was the MX-19/ARC-5 that was used with a R-23 or R-24/ARC-5 (both with the special ILS audio output circuits) as the adapter to the ZA-series ILS. The MX-19 has a relay which sets the receiver for voice and AVC operation, and makes an audio (but not power) connection. Did the ZA get power from a MX-20/ARC-5 on another receiver? I've run across a surprising number of used HF ARC-5 receivers with a MX-20 adapter.
I have been able to find *no* significant info on the ZA system. It would be interesting for anyone with knowledge of the technical details of the ZA to make them known.
The MX-20 was the ARC-5 equivalent to the ARA set's CBY-62036 power adapter, which often went to a ZB-series homing receiver-adapter. Maybe the MX-20 was intended to supply a ZB or R-1/ARR-1 until the R-4/ARR-2 homing receiver took over that function on the AN/ARC-5 receiver rack.
Plus, there's little doubt that the MX-20 supplied some LM-series CFI sets too.
