Mike,
This thread started off about putting a non-working TCS-12 transmitter on a
PT boat. Then for a while it was about how to start Buff and other military
jet engines (the current Subject was a tongue-in-cheek comment on that). Then
it shifted to SSBAM. So it doesn't appear that it can get too far off topic!

Actually, FM is not technically superior for short range nor SSB technically
superior for long range communications. The reasons they are generally used
for those purposes is part historical, part past regulatory, part political,
part encryption system requirements, and part business driven. And don't forget
that both VHF and UHF short to medium range aircraft communications (both
military and civilian) are still AM, not SSB nor FM. Short range versus long
range is a frequency and antenna, not mode, thingy.
