Not to diminish Marty's interesting observations on the technology, the 
greatest problem with the Smithsonian's and other museum aircraft is 
that you can't see the carefully restored avionics inside!  The virtual 
tours the NASM has been working on for many of the aircraft has been 
slow in getting off the ground (though some exist - 
http://www.nasm.si.edu/interact/qtvr/index.htm), but lack the point and 
click for details that I was led to believe would ultimately be there at 
some point.  I will probably get around to doing that for the interior 
shots on my web page before they do.  It's a difficult problem to solve 
- with thousands of folks filing through a museum, you can't have all 
those hands tuning dials and flipping switches or they would be worn out 
in a flash.  Some of the museums are lucky enough to have two of a type, 
enabling a cutaway to be built and allowing the public to file through, 
but not many museums were that farsighted (or lucky).  Dunno what the 
best answer is.....
