I've got a couple of these. Oddly, one is mis-marked "C-52/ARC-4" rather
than the correct "C-52/ARC-4A." The C-52 seems to be more common than the
earlier but more versatile C-51/ARC-4 box.

The manual AN 08-10-245 of 10 December 1943 is skimpy indeed. The revisions
of 20 June 1944 or later have much more technical info, with a complete
system schematic that includes the whole RT-19/ARC-4. It also has
information on the AN/ARC-4A.

I've been looking for one for years...no luck. Must be pretty rare.
Manuals for ARC-1, -2, -3, -5, SCR-274-N, SCR-522, and almost all other
common WW2 sets seem much more easily found.

The 10 June 1944 revision of the AN 08-10-245 defines these systems.

AN/ARC-4 consists of:

RT-19/ARC-4, MT-101/ARC-4, C-51/ARC-4, J-23/ARC-4.

I have no proof that it was ever used like this, but this version can easily
be cabled up to omit the J-23 box. A complete system can be implemented
using only the first three items on the above list, plus one PL-153-A
connector (for the C-51). The C-51 is my favorite control box of any WW2
design, since it includes everything one needs (channel select, mode select,
power, volume, radio-ICS, mic jack, and two phone jacks).

AN/ARC-4A consists of:

RT-19/ARC-4, MT-230/ARC with CX-182/ARC-4A, C-52/ARC-4A.

The C-52 has only a channel select and mode select switch, so the ARC-4A
requires an external ICS system (or something like a J-22A/ARC-5 jack box)
for volume control and mic/phone connections. It uses an AN-type connector.
The MT-230/CX-182 combo is a rack that uses two AN connectors just like the
AN/ARC-1 rack (which was a MT-230/ARC rack with CX-181/ARC-1 rear connector
assembly).
