In my post i pretty much used the language that was in the original article.
I got a couple
things not quite right. The rubber straps are used to mount the battery box,
not the
radio SCR-300/ BC-1000. The BC-1000 is held maybe 10-12 inches below the
AVR-20
by 4 metal strips or brackets or legs. Actually, it looks quite tuff, this
dashboard with
the 2 receivers ARR-13 (BC-1206 / Setchell Carlson 524 ) and AVR-20 and
BC-1000.
( Look for the forthcoming book, "I Was Tail Gunner on an L-5" ). Also, i
speculated
the L-5 never had a transmitter. I do not know this for a fact. Oddly, the
article does
not mention the HF transmitter at all, altho you would think #1 with that
wire antenna
it would -- you wouldn't think the receivers needed that much wire. #2 the
BC-1000
probably wouldn't be much help for air-ground comms at the airfields. But-
why would
they take it out??? Would they really fly the L-5 without an air-ground HF
transmitter?
The photos will eventually get posted. And yes, Dave, i reckoned you'd get a
kick out
of this one. -Hue Miller
