In the 50's WW2 and the recognition of who liberated them was still fresh in
France. Later, they resumed their old view that the world should be like
them.
Now, they're annoyed at us, because we don't want to be like them and we're
doing better than they're.
We want all the world to be like the USA? It's ridiculous... However, our
system works... and if others were doing just as well, they wouldn't be as
hostile to us out of envy.
In my travels in Europe I haven't experienced any "arrogant" remarks in
France on the personal level, except when the conversation turned to
politics. They're still convinced they invented diplomacy ;-) They're also
sore that the language of international diplomacy changed from French to
English. Otherwise, I had a ball there myself, met some nice people but I
wouldn't want to live there myself.
And nowadays most of the younger generation in France speak English - not
because of us, Americans, but because they learn it at school as the
primary foreign language, their close proximity to England (tourism), and
the language of hi-tech which is a must for success in many professions.
BTW one of my friends was "formerly French", as he called himself, who after
the fall of France in WW2, enlisted in the Free French Navy at the age of
16. He stayed in the US from a shore leave in NY after V-day in Europe. He
said that he first wanted to see France liberated but didn't want to return
after a travesty like the Vichy government could be perpetrated by France.
>From that day on he considered himself a proud American.
Back to military surplus radio stuff now!
