My experience of living in France for a year and visiting many times is 
that the arrogance of the French is a cliche. I've encountered much 
more arrogant treatment in Manhattan. The instances I've witnessed of 
tourists being treated poorly (and that was rare) was because they were 
acting poorly. After all, what would you do if a foreign visitor came 
here and demanded that you speak their language?
