Interestingly enough, here in the Philadelphia suburbs, they are free. Cardboard box pickup (recycling) is Monday morning; all one has to do is wander around the neighborhood and collect to one's heart's content. Or, live near a V******* cell phone center which puts out an excellent selection of boxes. Other misc. supplies come from relatives, friends, acquaintances and customers who can't believe you actually want "that stuff" and are only too glad to DELIVER it to my door(!).
One of the better materials available for packing/protecting the heavy-weights is "foam insulation/sheeting". Usually it's 1/2 to 1 inch thick and is nominally used for home wall insulation; esp. in new construction. It's easy to cut with a small knife (though messy), light-weight and if measured properly, actually (snugg fit inside box) ADDS STRENGTH to a cardboard box. You'll need a few "layers" to fill in a box, but the "ballistic" strength (ability to take a 'hit') is 'fantastic'. I have several 4 x 4 and 4 x 8 sheets (plywood sized) leaning against the walls. Acquired from leftovers after many neighbor's home improvement projects. Also used to ship furniture/packing. If you're in the area, and need to ship, help yourself to whatever I have. Bill KA3AIS
