I might agree, but that depends on what you would
consider a "dinging." I've sold quite a few items on
eBay, and my practice is always to have the local UPS
Store pack valuable items (puleeeze, don't anyone
start a thread about how your six-month old grandchild
packs items better than UPS Stores). My reasoning:
first, I don't have the time, desire or know-how to
pack things properly, particularly breakable
electronix. Second, I don't want my house cluttered
with used boxes, styrofoam, peanuts (egad!) and bubble
wrap. I'm not in the packing business, and I don't
need for my home to look like it is. Finally (and most
important, IMO), is that if I pack the thing, UPS will
blame me for shipping damage; if they pack it they'll
have one less excuse for trying to wiggle out of
paying a damage claim.

Here's what I do: prior to listing an item, I drag it
down to the UPS Store where they weigh it, quote a
packing cost and give me the packed weight and
dimensions. My eBay listings then clearly state the
packing cost (no markup), weight, dimensions and my
Zip code so that prospective buyers can go to the UPS
site themselves and get a shipping cost. Easy and
accurate. So, if passing along a $30.00 packing cost
for a heavy item is dinging, then add me to your list
of dingers (I'm "radiopractitioner" on eBay). BTW, it
galls me when someone is willing to plop down $600 for
an item, yet balks at a $30.00 packing charge. Go
figure. And while you're figuring, go buy from
someone else.
