The ARN 7 became the MN 62 ADF which was widely used. Some MN 62s were
factory made but many were ARN 7 conversions. My ARN 7 manual has a mimeographed
supplement which has step by step procedures for the FAA approved conversion.
99.9% is just connector changes. It even had instructions on how to affix a new
MN 62 plate on the rcvr. Even after the football loops disappeared the MN 62s
soldiered on with Bendix crossed ferrite bar goniometer type antennas. They
were plug compatible and allowed for nearly flush mounted ADF antennas, BIG drag
reduction. Many DC 6s and 7s converted. The fuel savings probably paid for the
upgrade. The APN 9 Loran was used in Pan Am and other Boeing 707s in the
early days. I saw several in 707s flying the Pacific routes from SFO. MY UAL
Boeing 377 manual shows ART 13 and BC 348 installed, but with different
nomenclature. The ART 13 is channelized with xtals. Surprising that the ARR 15 didnt make
it into airliners. More suited than the BC 348. Was it available in surplus
back then, 50s and early 60s?
