[Milsurplus] PE-103 Question

Just finished going through several PE-103 dynamotors acquired from an 
estate.   These are the units that originally went with the SCR-284.   Very popular 
in the early days just after the war because they worked on both 6 and 12 vdc, 
and many cars in use late 40's/early 50's still had 6 volt systems.

My question is, was it common Ham practice to remove the brushes from the 12 
volt motor in these things when running on 6 volts?   I found three of the 
units still set to 6 volts and these also had the 12 volt brushes removed.

Help!   Anyone have spare 12 volt brushes for the PE-103?
