Toledo ( Oregon ) Leader newspaper for April 15, 2005 had a special
centenail edition with an article on logging in the area. There's a
photo of a train locomotive with the name painted on the side,
"SIGNAL CORPS UNITED STATES ARMY". Seems like when the
US entered WW1 in April 1917 there was a great increase in the
need for light and strong spruce lumber for building aircraft.
Local industry was not up to the challenge, so the Army sent out
4,200 soldiers to help build 7 rail lines in Washington and 6 in
Oregon, as well as lumber mills in Toledo, OR and Vancouver,
WA. Article credits Army work in local coastal Oregon with
greatly boosting the development of the logging industry.
Come to think of it, i think i recall one of the "Green Books", or
was it GE's "Men & Volts at War", about US military taking trains
to France after D Day.
