That was a design problem with the original RT-524 and RT-246/VRC units.  The kit mentioned make the set look kind of clunky.  Among other things, the RT-524A and RT-246A models were redesigned mechanically to have proper strength front panel handles, so the A-models should not have the external cover-mounted handel assemblies.
