[Milsurplus] What is it?

Hi Dave:
That's a TBY receiver/transmitter. The Navaho codetalker/windtalker radio.
It's missing a few pieces and was subject to some mods -- like that octal
plug in the front panel. Inside view looks modded also, but I can't quite
picture what's not right, other than those coils that look sort of tossed in
there. Not original equipment.
Here's a web page on it:
http://www.jproc.ca/crypto/codetalk.html
here's another:

another (in French)

Can't seem to find one offhand with an inside view. There were two
different antenna mounts -- one with that big bakelite thing and the other
with the bracked and SO-239 style. These I believe are 60-80 Mhz,
regenerative.
The battery box plugged into the vibrator pack and the two plug into the
bottom of the radio. You might still see the connector on the bottom.
Also -- arbitrary tuning scales -- you'll see in the photos that there was
a frequency meter style loose-leaf attached to the top. Alongside was a
small key -- removable.
There's a place in the lid for spare tubes - -some of which are acorns.
